Euphoria Chocolate and the Flavors of the Pacific Northwest
The PNW is home to many bold and unique flavors inspired by the landscape and history of the state. Euphoria Chocolate Company isn't just another chocolatier, however; it's a heritage brand deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest itself.
Founded in 1980, we have been a staple for locals and visitors seeking high-quality, handcrafted chocolates and confections for decades. Our commitment to sourcing the finest ingredients and collaborating with local producers sets us apart, making every chocolate piece a testament to the region's rich culinary culture.
But just how did the PNW become such a flavor hotbed?
Why Does the PNW Have So Many Bold Flavors?
From the 1840s to the 1860s, thousands of people migrated westward on the Oregon Trail to seek the promise of the fertile Willamette Valley and the farming opportunities it could provide. Today, the Willamette Valley is still home to a vibrant agricultural region that Euphoria Chocolate Company continues to draw inspiration and ingredients from.
What Are Some of the Flavors the PNW is Best-Known For?
Oregon produces a number of agricultural commodities, from fruit to nuts to wine. Euphoria Chocolate Company uses many of these products in our chocolates.
Hazelnuts
Oregon grows 99% of United States' commercial hazelnut crop, producing more than 65,000 tons of the nut and valued at around $110M USD.
Most of the 93,000 acres of hazelnut orchards are contained in just 8 counties in Oregon, tended to by around 1,000 hazelnut farmers. Oregon's orchards contribute to about 5-6% of the worldwide hazelnut market. The nation's oldest continually-operating hazelnut farm was founded in 1892 in Springfield, OR; this farm also originated more than half of all commercial hazelnut trees in the United States!1
Coffee
While the weather in the PNW isn't conducive to growing coffee, there remains a long and strong tradition of coffee roasting and coffee houses in the PNW.
PNW Coffee History: Seattle
Dan Davies began roasting and selling coffee in 1887 under the name D. Davies & Co. In the 1890s, Gold Shield, a brand widely recognized as Seattle's first "true" coffee brand, started roasting and distributing their coffee; their products were immensely popular in the city. By 1908, two brothers from Boston opened Manning's Coffee in the Pike Place Market, and by the 1920s, the company was expanding into Oregon and California. Manning's boasted 60 West Coast locations by the end of the 1930s. Coffeehouses were becoming popular across the West Coast in the 40s and 50s, and by the 1970s, the seeds of both Starbucks and Peet's Coffee were germinating.2
PNW Coffee History: Portland
Portland's coffee history began in about 1850, when several merchants joined together to start trading coffee and tea in the new territory. By 1865, JF Jones and Co. had started what is recognized as Portland's first coffee company. By the 1920s, Prohibition began turning coffee into a popular commodity and Seattle coffees were spreading south. By the 1980s, Portland's own Stumptown Coffee was founded.3
Fruit
Euphoria Chocolate Company celebrates the Pacific Northwest's abundant fruit harvests by incorporating fresh, locally sourced cherries, marionberries, peaches, strawberries, and raspberries into our truffles. Each fruit brings its unique flavor profile, creating a vibrant and refreshing chocolate experience.
Wine
Oregon has just over 1,100 wineries (700 of them in the Willamette Valley alone!) covering approximately 40,000 acres of vineyards; the state only accounts for about 1% of the wine produced in the U.S. Popular wine grape varietals grown in Oregon are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling.4
